Sustainability is an important value for the ceramics industry, so much so that it became the first to have an international standard developed by ISO for sustainable products.

Producers' attention to sustainability continues to grow, as does that of consumers, who are clamoring for production that respects the health of the Planet.

While it is true that sustainability comes through small everyday actions, it is also true that production departments can introduce targeted protocols to decrease emissions, safeguard the environment and optimize performance, through the use of building materials.

Based on all this, the first global standard to describe a sustainable product with regard to ceramic tiles was published in 2021 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

What is the ISO 17889-1:2021 standard

ISO 17889-1:2021, Ceramic tiling systems - Sustainability for ceramic tiles and installation materials - Part 1: Specification for ceramic tiles is a quality standard that defines the production process of ceramic tiles.

Specifically, the standard focuses on defining sustainability requirements for ceramic tiles by evaluating environmental, economic and social criteria.

Similarly, the regulations provide for evaluation of the rating achieved, so as to enable comparison, to support certification schemes.

The ISO standard was also designed with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined by the UN as part of the 2030 Agenda in mind. A second part of the standard, which relates to tile-laying materials such as adhesives, grouts and membranes, is also currently being developed.

Premier's commitment to sustainability

For Premier, sustainability is a core value. Our innovations, such as Satellite, are designed to reduce the environmental impact of tile production. Alternating Premier Satellite and Fickert, in fact, generates two major benefits:

  • Reducing production costs.
  • Reducing the amount of non-recyclable waste produced by the line, which is a great benefit to the environment.
